Knox Preston Church Worship Service July 26’20

Kid’s Preparation: If your kids are joining us for worship, invite them to go out in the yard, or garden, or down by the creek or the nearby field, and dig up a weed. Pot the weed with some potting soil or good old dirt, and bring it to the worship service. Ask the kids how many of these weeds they saw where they dug it up, and what they think about that weed.

Song: Be Thou my vision

1 Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

naught be all else to me, save that thou art--

thou my best thought by day or by night,

waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

2 Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;

I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;

thou my great Father, I thy true son;

thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

3 Be thou my battle shield, sword for my fight;

be thou my dignity, thou my delight,

thou my soul's shelter, thou my high tow'r:

raise thou me heav'n-ward, O Pow'r of my pow'r.

4 Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,

thou mine inheritance, now and always:

thou and thou only, first in my heart,

High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

5 High King of heaven, my victory won,

may I reach heaven's joys, O bright heav'n's Sun!

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Scripture: Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52

The Stories of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast

31 Jesus told the crowd another story. He said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed. Someone took the seed and planted it in a field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds. But when it grows, it is the largest of all garden plants. It becomes a tree. Birds come and rest in its branches.”

33 Jesus told them still another story. “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast,” he said. “A woman mixed it into 60 pounds of flour. The yeast worked its way all through the dough.

Matthew 13:44-52

The Stories of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure that was hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again. He was very happy. So he went and sold everything he had. And he bought that field.

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader who was looking for fine pearls. 46 He found one that was very valuable. So he went away and sold everything he had. And he bought that pearl.

The Story of the Net

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net. It was let down into the lake. It caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and gathered the good fish into baskets. But they threw the bad fish away. 49 This is how it will be on judgment day. The angels will come. They will separate the people who did what is wrong from those who did what is right. 50 They will throw the evil people into the blazing furnace. There the evil ones will weep and grind their teeth.

51 “Do you understand all these things?” Jesus asked.

“Yes,” they replied.

He said to them, “Every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house. He brings new treasures out of his storeroom as well as old ones.” 52

Prayers of the People

Benediction

Closing Song: We Will Meet

1) We will meet; when the danger is over, we will meet when

the sad days are done; We will meet sitting closely

together and be glad our tomorrow has come.

2) We will join to give thanks and sing gladly, we will join to

break bread and share wine; and the peace that we pass

to each other will be more than a casual sign.

3) So lets make with each other a promise that when all that

we’ve come through is behind, we will share what we

missed and find meaning in what once troubled our mind.

4) Until then may we always discover faith and love to

determine our way.

That’s our hope, and God’s will and our calling for our lives

and for ev’ry new day.
